I have been spending more and more time using and modifying Gnome to get used to it and as this issue seemed to coincide with me switching back and forth between the two desktops, I mistakenly blamed Gnome. Visiting the Speed Crunch website was not very informative until I got lucky and narrowed my search to "toolbar" and found ONE reported issue and the simple answer. It doesn’t include any annotation features, but you can choose to snap. solution is to change it in the System Preferences to something else, switch to SpeedCrunch and press F11, then change Expose back to F11. Lightscreen is the perfect tool because it’s not only open source and free, but it’s also unbelievably simple. screen mode is F11, which might collide with the Expose shortcut. This led me to believe the problem was with Gnome, but maybe not. Taking screenshots is something I find myself doing all the time whether it be for an article I’m writing, or just trying to troubleshoot a problem at work. I uninstalled and reinstalled Speed Crunch many times in both Unity and Gnome desktops and when it loaded up their was no visible menu bar in Gnome but their was in Unity. Who knew.Once the menu bar is hidden their is no way to retrieve it unless you happen to know the keyboard shortcuts. The "tool bar" which they call a "menu bar" can be hidden by accidentally clicking on the option to hide it in a drop down menu or this can be done (and undone) by Ctrl+Alt+M.
